30 Day Organization Challenge: Choose Your Challenge

Getting organized can be a lot of work. This season of yard sales and fresh air is an especially good time to get your home in order, before the cold weather sets in. The last thing you want, when it’s too cold to enjoy the outdoors, is to be stuck inside with a houseful of clutter and junk. So, while it can be tempting to head down to the local watering hole and ignore the mess inside, we encourage you to pick up a broom and dustpan and try one of these 30-day organization challenges to get your home in order before autumn sets in.

Organization Challenge 1: Room by Room

The room-by-room organization challenge is perfect for those who have not yet gotten into a good house-cleaning routine. Every day for thirty days, you have to clean one room of your house. Keep track of which rooms you’ve done in a dedicated notebook, and when you finish every room in the house, go back to the first room and start over.

This challenge is easy—anyone can clean one room in a day—but it does wonders for getting your house in order because it doesn’t leave a lot of space for your home to get messy again before you’re back to cleaning it. The point of this challenge is to get you used to what a clean home feels like. You’ll find that your stress levels go down in the rooms that are cleaner, and that your stress levels are higher in rooms that have acquired more mess and clutter.

The other great thing about this challenge is that it encourages you to revisit rooms. Maybe the second time you go to clean your bathroom, it’s not that bad. Suddenly, instead of spending an hour scrubbing grime out of your tub, you can give it a quick wipe-down and have time left over to go through your medicine cabinet and clean it out.

Organization Challenge 2: Purging

If your issue with your house isn’t messiness so much as clutter, the purging challenge may be more your speed. The great thing with this decluttering challenge is that it starts easy and slowly gets harder and harder. Here’s how it works:

Day 1 of the challenge, you need to find 1 thing in your home to get rid of. That’s it. The key is that it has to leave your house that day, whether that means it goes into the garbage or you take it straight to Goodwill.

On Day 2, you need to get rid of 2 items in your home. On Day 3, 3 items, and so on, until you’re taking a whopping 30 items out of your house on the last day of the month.

Keep in mind, these don’t have to be big items. You can choose to purge your house of unnecessary furniture, but you can also choose to use this challenge to go through your closet or bookshelves—wherever the clutter is piling up in your home. By the end of the month, you may even find that in a once-cluttered house, you have to be a bit creative to get rid of the requisite number of items. That’s okay. By the end of the month, you’ll have rid your house of a whopping 465 items—and it won’t even feel like that much work on any one day!
