10 Video Games to Play with Your Wife in 2019

10 Video Games to Play with Your Wife in 2019

What do you and your wife do to unwind at the end of a long day? If you’re like most couples, you curl up on the couch together to watch TV—and while that’s one great way to relax, it often means you aren’t talking to each other or working together during those evening hours, and are instead passive participants being entertained by the television. Now imagine that instead of watching television, the two of you decided to play a video game together. Collaborating to play a video game means talking to each other, problem solving together, strategizing, and turn-taking—all activities that can serve to bring you closer together as a couple and reinvigorate your marriage. So why don’t more couples choose to play video games together?

One reason is that, for years, video games have tended to be marketed towards men. As a result, your wife may feel weird admitting if she likes video games, or may have a misconception of all video games as being overly violent or of taking a lot of hand-eye coordination. Those who love video games of all types, however, know that people who say they don’t like video games just haven’t found the right video games. These days, more and more video games are being produced that can be enjoyed by men and women both. So take notes: here are 10 video games coming out in 2019 that you and your wife are both sure to love!

10.) Ikenfell

Harry Potter lovers everywhere can agree on one thing: Harry Potter videos have, on the whole, been disappointing. Perhaps that’s why Ikenfell, an indie RPG set in a wizarding school, has garnered so much positive attention. Funded mostly through Kickstarter, Ikenfell has the retro style that’s so popular among indie games these days, but it’s far from just another retro indie game. The producer recently announced that the game will have approximately 20 solid hours of gameplay by its completion. This game is primed to have a little something for everyone: mystery, intrigue, a tight storyline, puzzles, and interesting animation. The turn-based RPG battle system will be easy for your wife to learn, while strategy elements will make it fun for you to master, ensuring you both have a great time.

9.) Animal Crossing

Not much is known about the Animal Crossing game that’s being released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. A couple of teaser trailers have been released, but nothing else, so while the anticipation is heavy, the mystery behind it prevented it from making it higher on our list. Still, if it’s anything like its predecessors, the new Animal Crossing game is guaranteed to draw your wife in with its simulation-style gameplay and adorable artwork. If your wife is particularly apprehensive about trying out video games, this is sure to be a safe place to start her out.

8.) Luigi’s Mansion 3

Take the premise of Ghostbuster’s, add a dash of Scooby Doo, and make Luigi the protagonist, and you have the ever-popular Luigi’s Mansion series. Coming out on the Switch in 2019, Luigi’s Mansion 3 will pack a powerful punch of nostalgia for you and your wife both. Just mysterious enough to keep your interest, Luigi’s Mansion 3 will also have a cute, lovable element to it that’s guaranteed to win her heart.

7.) Yoshi’s Crafted World

We were expecting the new Yoshi game this year, not least because Nintendo had a playable demo of it at E3 2017. Despite the delay to 2019, most reviewers agree that it will be worth the wait. This side-scrolling platformer game is a low-stakes way for your wife to practice the hand-eye coordination and timing that will be necessary skills if the two of you want to take on more advanced games in the future, and is apt to challenge and entertain you as well. Meanwhile, the attention Nintendo put into the game’s hand-crafted visage is fun to behold.

6.) Pokémon

The past few years have seen the Pokémon following receive a major reboot.  Between Pokémon Go, Pokémon: Let’s Go Evee, and Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu, it’s unsurprising that Pokémon fans are primed and ready to go. But where all of these games have been reboots or spin-offs, the game that Tsunekazu Ishihara has teased is coming out in 2019 is said to be a core game in the series—the first core game to be created for the Switch. This is a great way for you and your wife to get into—or back into—the franchise.

5.) Fire Emblem: 3 Houses

If you want to play a more graphics-heavy game with your wife in 2019, look no further than the upcoming Fire Emblem game. Your wife will love the relationship-building element of the game, and you’re sure to love managing your troops and units. The turn-based strategy RPG style is one that you’ll both feel comfortable with and be able to master, ensuring an overall great experience for you both.

4.) In the Valley of the Gods

Back in 2016, Campo Santo released a game called Firewatch, a slow-moving game that allowed you to explore a beautiful world while telling the main storyline mostly through the dialogue between two characters. In 2019 they’re set to release In the Valley of the Gods, a similarly character-driven game, this time set in Egypt in the 1920s. If it’s anything like its predecessor, In the Valley of the Gods is bound to be enchanting to play, with exciting tomb exploration coupled with slow, heart-wrenching character building.

3.) Psychonauts 2

Part puzzle game, part platformer, the Psychonauts series draws on grotesque animation and skewed psychology to create a game that’s uniquely worth playing. If your wife is the type to enjoy getting to know people, she’ll love the way that each telekinetic dive opens up the world of another’s psyche. Meanwhile, there’s bound to be tons to explore, some challenging platforming for you, and an interesting storyline for you both.

2.) Ori and the Will of the Wisps

One of the most beautiful games that's come out in recent years is Ori and the Blind Forest, a platforming and puzzle-solving game that brings players into the spiritual realm of a forest. The original won multiple awards, and if its sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, is anything like it, you and your wife will want to put it towards the top of your “to play” list for 2019. Enchanting animation and beautiful music make this a calming, heart-wrenching series to work through.

1.) Kingdom Hearts 3

At the very top of our list of games for you to play with your wife is the newest game in the Kingdom Hearts saga. If nothing else will tempt your wife into the joy of video games, Disney can be your trump card. Like with the previous Kingdom Hearts games, this one will allow you to explore many of the fascinating characters from Disney and Pixar, leading to a family-friendly game that somehow still feels deliciously grown-up. The hype surrounding this game is huge, and we are sure it won’t disappoint.

If you love video games and want to be able to share that activity with your wife, you may have to do some digging to find the type of video game that she’ll love as much as you do. Once you do, however, you won’t have to fly solo when playing your favorite games: You can put your headphones away and enjoy the game in surround-sound, the way it was meant to be enjoyed, with your wife by your side.
